Primary school

Almost every district has its own primary school. In the larger towns, you have a choice of schools with a religious bias. The classes are small. Many children stay at school during the lunch break. There are also proper agreements with the after-school care (BSO). At some schools, the BSO is in the same building, at others transport has been arranged. The primary schools in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen prepare your child well for the future!

Kindergarten

One major advantage of living in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is the very well-regulated childcare facilities, with no waiting lists. There are playgroups, a day care, after-school care and a network of recognised host families. The National Childcare Register (Landelijk Register Kinderopvang, LRKO) lists all childcare centres, after-school care organisations, host family agencies and host families who meet the quality requirements of the Dutch Childcare Act.

Secondary school

There is one secondary education organisation in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which is called Stichting Voortgezet Onderwijs Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. They stand for good, contemporary education with regional roots, where all pupils feel welcome and can develop their talents to the full. Four schools fall into this organisation:

• Lodewijkcollege in Terneuzen
• Reynaertcollege in Hulst
• Zwincollege in Oostburg
• Praktijkschool Hulst

Special needs education

There are also good facilities for children who need special education. They are happiest in their own school system. Taxi transportation to schools for children who have difficulty learning can be reimbursed by the municipalities.

Secondary vocational education (MBO)

Scalda provides secondary vocational education and adult education throughout the province of Zeeland. Scalda continues the line of its predecessors ROC Western Scheldt and ROC Zeeland offering accessible and versatile education from eleven small-scale, subject-oriented colleges as well as from CIOS Goes-Breda (Sports school), MBO Dance Goes and De Ruyter Maritime And Logistics College. In total, there are about 140 different courses at various levels. Scalda is in close contact with secondary schools, which makes it easier to continue studying. It is also possible to start a higher education course at home, because HZ University of Applied Sciences provides a number of foundation program courses here. Within these various courses, the emphasis lies on a modern form of education: competency-based learning. This will make vocational education more varied, more fun and more modern in the years to come.

Higher vocational education

The most significant institution of higher education in the province of Zeeland is HZ University of Applied Sciences. HZ has three locations: two in the city of Vlissingen and one in the city of Terneuzen.

HZ has about 4,000 students, who can follow a full-time, part-time or dual programme. They can choose from 23 higher education programmes or 3 secondary vocational education programmes in the fields of Education, Nursing, Health, Human Resource Management, Social Work, Business Administration, Communication, ICT, Engineering, Built Environment, Applied Sciences, Water Management, Maritime Operations and International Logistics.

HZ is a university of applied sciences with a strong international character. About 500 foreign students of various nationalities study at Zeeland's coast. HZ students also get the chance to get to know other cultures and increase their language skills through excursions, internships, thesis subjects and international exchange programmes.

Studying in Belgium

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen also cooperates with the Ghent University Association, which includes Howest, Ghent University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Artevelde University and Ghent University. The colleges and university of Antwerp also have a great reputation and are easy to reach from Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
