Land van Saeftinghe

For Western European terms it is an unprecedented vast brackish water wilderness: a visit to The Drowned Land of Saefthinge (Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe) is an unforgettable experience! In this 36 km² primeval landscape, you can see, smell and experience the rhythm of the tides, the influence of the sea and the Scheldt. The rich history - it once had a castle - has left its mark.

It is a unique area that you can walk through, but because of its natural values and especially safety, it is not freely accessible to a large extent. However, it is possible to explore the area with a guide. The guides know the area with its many deep trenches and creeks like the back of their hand. A guided visit is highly recommended! You can also visit the visitors centre and special activities are organised for children.

The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe is located on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, 10 kilometres from Hulst. Emmadorp, the village where the nature reserve is located, also offers catering facilities. An overnight stay or lunch will allow you to experience the ultimate feeling of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen!
